In Loving Memory of Nicholas “Nic” Crews
With profound sorrow and heavy hearts, the community of Jasper mourns the tragic loss of Nicholas “Nic” Crews, whose life was senselessly taken following a devastating act of violence at the Pickens VA Clinic on March 17, 2026. His passing on March 18 has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his loved ones, colleagues, and all who were touched by his compassion and service.
Nic Crews, 34, of Marietta, dedicated his life to helping others. As a social work case manager, he stood on the frontlines of care, offering guidance, empathy, and support to individuals navigating some of life’s most difficult challenges. His work was more than a profession—it was a calling rooted in kindness, patience, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
On that tragic afternoon, what should have been a place of healing became the scene of heartbreak. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Nic was shot inside the clinic by Lawrence Charles Michels, who had come seeking a mental health consultation. The sudden act of violence shattered the safety of the facility and forever changed the lives of many.
Nic was critically injured and airlifted to a trauma hospital, where medical teams fought tirelessly to save him. Despite their best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the following day. His passing is not just a loss to his family and friends, but to an entire community that depended on his care and compassion.
In the moments that followed the shooting, further chaos unfolded outside the clinic. The gunman exited the building armed, leading to an exchange of gunfire involving responding officers and an armed civilian. The situation ultimately ended with Michels being fatally wounded at the scene. While no law enforcement officers were injured, the emotional toll of that day continues to ripple through the community.
As we remember Nic Crews, we choose to focus not on the violence that ended his life, but on the purpose that defined it. He was a helper, a listener, and a light for those who often felt unseen. His presence brought comfort, and his absence leaves a silence that cannot be filled.
This tragedy also serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of mental health awareness, community support, and the safety of those who dedicate their lives to helping others. Nic stood in that space every day—with courage and compassion—and his legacy will continue to inspire others to do the same.
To his family, friends, and colleagues, may you find strength in the memories you shared and the lives he impacted. To the community, may we honor him by carrying forward the kindness and care he so freely gave.
Rest in peace, Nicholas “Nic” Crews. Your life mattered, your work mattered, and your memory will forever remain in the hearts of those you served and loved.
