According to the Washington State Patrol, the tragic collision occurred on Friday, March 13, 2026, at approximately 9:45 p.m. along Washington State Route 24 near milepost 21, roughly 15 miles east of the Moxee City Limits in Yakima.

Authorities reported that a vehicle traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lane while attempting an unsafe pass, colliding head-on with another vehicle driven by Danielle Reed, 35, of Kelso. The violent impact caused catastrophic damage and instantly turned an ordinary night into a tragedy that would forever change the lives of many families.

Inside the westbound vehicle were Luis A. Martines, 39, and Yajaira J. Martinez, 38, both of Bellingham. Sadly, both were pronounced deceased at the scene following the collision. Two young passengers, ages 6 and 8, were also inside the vehicle and sustained injuries. They were transported to Yakima Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.

In the eastbound vehicle, Danielle Reed was traveling with two children. Reed was injured and taken to the same hospital for treatment. One of the children, a 13-year-old girl, was also injured in the crash. Tragically, the 11-year-old girl from Kelso lost her life and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators later determined that unsafe passing was the cause of the collision. Officials also reported that while some occupants were wearing seatbelts, others were not at the time of the crash.

As the investigation continues, the focus for many has turned toward honoring the lives of those who were lost.

Luis A. Martines and Yajaira J. Martinez were more than names in a report — they were family members, loved ones, and individuals whose lives were filled with memories, relationships, and experiences that mattered deeply to those who knew them. Their sudden passing has left family members facing unimaginable grief as they remember the love, laughter, and moments they shared together.

At the same time, the loss of a young 11-year-old girl has shaken the community of Kelso. A child with a future full of dreams and possibilities, her life was tragically cut short in a moment that no family ever expects to face. The loss of someone so young carries a particularly deep sorrow, leaving friends, relatives, and classmates heartbroken.

This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of how fragile life can be and how quickly circumstances can change. Communities across the region are offering prayers, condolences, and support to the grieving families as they navigate the difficult days ahead.

Though their lives ended far too soon, the memories of Luis A. Martines, Yajaira J. Martinez, and the beloved 11-year-old girl from Kelso will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved them.
