CLAYTON, N.J. — The Clayton community is grappling with an unimaginable loss following the tragic death of Zara Zaman, a bright and promising high school student whose life was cut short in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday night, March 1, 2026. The incident has left family, friends, classmates, and neighbors heartbroken, as the community mourns the loss of a young life filled with potential, kindness, and promise.

According to the Clayton Police Department, officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at approximately 9:52 p.m. at the intersection of East Academy Street and Fries Mill Road. Investigators reported that the crash occurred when one vehicle attempted a left-hand turn and entered the path of a second vehicle traveling southbound. The impact caused one of the vehicles to overturn, trapping three occupants inside. Emergency responders worked swiftly to extricate those trapped and provide medical assistance.

Zara was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, she was later pronounced deceased from injuries sustained in the crash. Alongside Zara, the accident involved two former graduates and two current students of Clayton Public Schools.
