In Loving Memory of Kenneth C. “Craig” Lanier and Rhonda Lanier

The community of Nevils in Bryan County, Georgia, is grieving the devastating loss of Kenneth C. “Craig” Lanier and his beloved wife, Rhonda Lanier, a married couple whose lives were tragically cut short in a heartbreaking act of violence on Sunday, March 8. Their sudden passing has left family, friends, and neighbors in deep mourning, as the community struggles to come to terms with a loss that has shaken the area to its core.

According to the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, the tragic chain of events began around 4 p.m. Sunday in the Nevils area. What initially appeared to be an act of kindness—someone stopping to help a stranded motorist—quickly spiraled into a series of events that would end in unimaginable tragedy.

Authorities say a local resident stopped to assist a man who appeared to have run out of gas near his home. The driver, later identified as Anthony Andrea Forney, had reportedly been posing as a stranded motorist. In a gesture of goodwill and compassion, the man stepped out of his truck and went to retrieve a gas can from his residence to help the individual in need.

In a shocking turn of events, investigators say the suspect took advantage of that kindness. While the truck owner was away retrieving the gas can, Forney allegedly climbed into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and sped away. The truck’s owner quickly contacted the Bulloch County 911 Center to report the theft and remained on the line with dispatchers while tracking the vehicle using a GPS tracking system.

The GPS signal initially led authorities to the area near Sally Mae’s Restaurant on Highway 67 in Bulloch County. Deputies and Georgia State Patrol units responded to the location, but by the time they arrived, the suspect and the stolen vehicle had already left the area.

Shortly afterward, another GPS ping placed the vehicle near Ash Branch Church Road. As officers continued to track the signal, it led them into Bryan County. Deputies from Bulloch County, Bryan County, and Georgia State Patrol troopers coordinated their response, heading toward the area connected with the latest GPS location.

As officers approached the area, they spotted a gray Toyota Camry exiting a driveway at a high rate of speed. According to investigators, the driver was quickly recognized as the same individual connected to the earlier stolen truck incident.

Law enforcement immediately initiated a pursuit. However, the chase came to a sudden and tragic end when officers observed the vehicle’s brake lights activate abruptly. The Camry lost control, veered into a ditch, and overturned onto its roof. When officers reached the vehicle, they discovered the suspect had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound prior to the crash.

While the pursuit was unfolding, additional deputies approached the residence from which the Camry had exited. At the rear of the home, they discovered the stolen pickup truck connected to the earlier incident.

Concerned about the occupants of the home, deputies attempted to make contact with the residents. Looking through the windows, they saw two individuals lying on the floor inside. Deputies entered the home and tragically discovered Kenneth C. “Craig” Lanier and Rhonda Lanier, both deceased from gunshot wounds.

The shocking discovery has left the Bryan County community heartbroken. The Laniers were more than victims of a tragic crime—they were members of a community, neighbors, friends, and loved ones whose lives held meaning and value to those around them.

Sheriff Mark D. Crowe of the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office addressed the tragedy in a statement Monday, expressing the deep sorrow felt by law enforcement and the community. He said the agency’s “hearts are very heavy today,” reflecting the grief shared by all those affected by this devastating event.

For those who knew Craig and Rhonda Lanier, their memory extends far beyond the tragedy that took their lives. They were a married couple who shared a life together—building a home, nurturing relationships, and contributing to the community around them. Their lives were intertwined through love, partnership, and the everyday moments that make a life meaningful.

Friends and neighbors remember them as kind-hearted individuals whose presence brought warmth to those around them. Their home was a place where life was lived, memories were made, and connections were strengthened. The sudden loss of both Craig and Rhonda has left an immeasurable void that will be deeply felt for years to come.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working diligently to piece together every detail surrounding the events that led to this tragedy. For now, the focus within the community remains on honoring the lives of Craig and Rhonda Lanier and supporting the loved ones who are now navigating an unimaginable grief.

Their story is a reminder of how precious and fragile life can be. Though their lives ended in a heartbreaking way, the legacy they leave behind—in the love they shared, the people they cared for, and the memories they created—will continue to live on.

May Kenneth C. “Craig” Lanier and Rhonda Lanier be remembered not for the tragedy that took them, but for the lives they lived and the love they shared. Their memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and cherished them.
