In Loving Memory of Thea Shelton
The community of McMinnville is grieving an unimaginable loss following the tragic death of Thea Shelton, an 8-year-old student at Hickory Creek Elementary School whose life was taken far too soon on Sunday, March 9, 2026. Her passing has left a deep and painful void in the hearts of her family, classmates, teachers, and everyone across Warren County who had the privilege of knowing her or hearing her story.
According to Jackie D. Matheny Jr., deputies with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched at approximately 2:10 p.m. on Sunday to a residence in the 200 block of Greenwood Drive after receiving a request for a welfare check. What began as a routine call quickly turned into a heartbreaking scene that would shake the entire community.
When deputies arrived and conducted an initial assessment, additional officers were called to assist. Upon entering the residence, authorities discovered three individuals deceased inside the home. Investigators later determined that Joseph Nicholas Shelton Jr. fatally shot Randi Jean Shelton and their young daughter, Thea Shelton, before turning the gun on himself in what officials have described as an apparent murder-suicide. Authorities confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public, though the investigation remains active as officials continue to process the tragic circumstances surrounding the case.
While the details of the incident are devastating, the focus for many in the community remains on remembering the life of a young girl who brought warmth, joy, and light to those around her.
Thea Shelton was known among her classmates and teachers at Hickory Creek Elementary as a bright and cheerful child with a kind heart and a gentle spirit. Those who knew her describe a little girl who loved to smile, laugh, and make others feel welcome. Her innocence and joyful personality left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.
At just eight years old, Thea was at the beginning of a life filled with dreams, curiosity, and endless possibilities. She was learning, growing, and discovering the world around her in the way only a child can—with wonder, excitement, and an open heart. Her teachers recall her as a student who was eager to participate, quick to offer a friendly word to classmates, and always ready to brighten a classroom with her presence.
The tragedy has deeply impacted the entire school community. Classmates who once shared lessons, laughter, and playground moments with Thea are now grappling with the painful reality of losing a friend. Teachers and staff members are also mourning the loss of a student who represented the very innocence and hope that schools strive to nurture every day.
Across McMinnville and throughout Warren County, neighbors and community members have come together to support one another in the wake of this heartbreaking event. Families, educators, and local leaders are leaning on each other for strength while offering comfort to those most affected. Vigils, prayers, and quiet moments of remembrance have begun to emerge as the community searches for ways to honor a young life taken too soon.
In moments like these, communities often discover the depth of their compassion. Parents are holding their children a little closer. Teachers are offering extra support and reassurance to students. Friends and neighbors are reaching out, reminding one another that no one has to carry grief alone.
Thea’s life, though far too short, touched many hearts. Her laughter, her smile, and the happiness she brought into the classroom will not be forgotten. The memories she created with classmates, teachers, and loved ones will continue to live on in the stories people share and the love they carry forward in her honor.
As the McMinnville community mourns, they also remember a little girl whose presence made the world around her brighter. Though her time on earth was brief, the joy she gave to others will remain a lasting part of the lives she touched.
Today, Thea Shelton is remembered not for the tragedy that took her life, but for the light she brought into the world during the eight precious years she was here. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of her family, her school, and an entire community that will never forget her.
May her beautiful soul rest in eternal peace. 🤍🕊️
