It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we remember and honor the life of Kaleb Mitchell, a dedicated deputy who tragically lost his life in a fatal crash while serving and protecting his community. His passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, fellow officers, friends, and the entire community he worked so faithfully to protect.

Deputy Mitchell’s life was defined by service, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the safety of others. Every day he put on his uniform, he did so knowing the risks that come with the profession, yet he chose to stand on the front lines to ensure that the people of his community could live in peace and security. Law enforcement is a calling that demands sacrifice, strength, and dedication, and Deputy Mitchell exemplified these qualities in every sense.

Those who knew him describe a man of integrity, compassion, and quiet strength. He was more than a deputy—he was a protector, a teammate, a friend, and a family member whose kindness and determination touched the lives of many. Whether responding to emergencies, supporting his fellow deputies, or simply offering reassurance to those in need, he carried out his duties with professionalism and heart.

The loss of a law enforcement officer in the line of duty is a tragedy that reverberates far beyond the department walls. It is felt by the families who sacrifice time with their loved ones, by the colleagues who stand shoulder to shoulder in service, and by the community members who rely on their bravery each day. Deputy Mitchell’s passing is a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.

Leaders and members of the community have already begun expressing their condolences and support. Following the heartbreaking news, a call was made to Ronnie Kimbrough to offer condolences and assure the department that support will be available during this difficult time. The outpouring of prayers, love, and gratitude from the community reflects just how deeply Deputy Mitchell’s service was valued.

Behind the badge was a person who had dreams, loved ones, and a life devoted to making a difference. His family now carries the unimaginable weight of losing someone who meant everything to them. While words can never fully ease the pain of such a loss, the community stands united in honoring his sacrifice and offering strength to those he leaves behind.

Deputy Mitchell’s legacy will live on in the lives he protected, the colleagues he inspired, and the community he served with pride. His dedication reminds us of the courage required to serve in law enforcement and the extraordinary individuals who choose that path.

The community of Concord, North Carolina, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two lives taken far too soon following a tragic early-morning crash on Friday, March 6, along Interstate 85. The devastating accident claimed the lives of Ryan Stamper, 25, and Robert Muellemann, 54—two individuals whose journeys in life ended in an instant but whose memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved them.

The crash occurred shortly after 5 a.m. on the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near mile marker 49, close to the Concord-Padgett Regional Airport in Concord. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a blue 2017 Ford Focus driven by Ryan Stamper entered the interstate traveling the wrong direction after coming from Exit 49 for Brunton Smith Boulevard. Moments later, the vehicle collided head-on with a red 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Robert Muellemann in the leftmost lane.

The impact of the crash was catastrophic. Both drivers tragically lost their lives at the scene, leaving behind families, friends, and communities struggling to process the sudden loss. The tragedy also led to several secondary crashes, and emergency crews from the Mecklenburg EMS Agency and Cabarrus EMS responded quickly to assist those involved. Two individuals were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

While investigations continue, the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine whether impairment may have played a role in the incident. Yet beyond the details of the investigation lies a deeper reality: two lives, each with their own stories, dreams, and loved ones, have been lost.

Ryan Stamper was only 25 years old, standing at the beginning of a life filled with possibility. Those who knew him remember a young man with a future ahead of him, someone whose life was still unfolding with hopes, ambitions, and plans. His passing leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of his family and friends who watched him grow and dreamed alongside him.

Robert Muellemann, 54, was a man who had lived through decades of experiences, building connections, relationships, and memories along the way. For many, he was likely a father, a colleague, a friend, or a neighbor whose presence brought stability and familiarity to everyday life. His sudden passing is a painful reminder of how fragile life can be, even during an ordinary morning commute.

In the hours following the crash, southbound lanes of Interstate 85 were closed for several hours near Exit 52 at Poplar Tent Road as investigators worked diligently at the scene. Traffic slowly resumed later in the day, but for many, the emotional impact of the tragedy lingers far longer than the physical closure of the roadway.

Today, the Concord community pauses to remember two men whose lives ended on that stretch of highway. Though the circumstances were tragic, their lives were far more than the moment that took them. They were individuals with families who loved them, friends who cherished them, and stories that deserve to be remembered.

In times like these, communities come together in shared grief and compassion. Friends and loved ones will hold onto memories—laughter shared, lessons learned, and moments that now carry even deeper meaning. Those memories become the threads that keep the spirit of Ryan Stamper and Robert Muellemann alive.

May their families find strength in the love that surrounds them during this unimaginable time. May their memories bring comfort in the days ahead. And may we all take a moment to remember the preciousness of life and the importance of kindness, patience, and care for one another every day.

Rest in peace, Ryan Stamper and Robert Muellemann.
Your lives mattered, your memories will endure, and you will never be forgotten. 🕊️
